FolderHue

How to restore the default folder icon in Windows

Changed your mind about a folder's icon? You can always put the plain yellow folder back. Here are both ways: with FolderHue, which restores everything you changed in one click, and by hand in Windows.

Steps

  1. Open My folders

In FolderHue, open My folders. It lists every folder you have changed.

  2. Restore one or all

Click the restore button next to a folder, or Restore all at the top.

  3. Or use the right-click menu

Right-click the folder in File Explorer, choose Folder color, then Restore default.

By hand in Windows

  1. Right-click the folder and choose Properties.
  2. Open the Customize tab.
  3. Click Change Icon…, then Restore Defaults, and OK.

This resets the icon but can leave the desktop.ini file behind. FolderHue's Restore removes what it added and puts back any icon the folder had before.

Questions

Will restoring delete my files?

No. Only the folder's icon changes. The files inside are not touched.

I uninstalled FolderHue. Can I still restore?

Yes, by hand with the Windows steps above, or reinstall FolderHue and use My folders.
